The Samsung SGH-A737 – lime (AT&T) is a slider phone that comes for $49 with a two-year contract. It is equipped with 3 G HSDPA technology enabling access to videos and music from AT&T’s vast repertoire. Additionally it comes with a 1.3 mega pixel camera without a flash, Bluetooth, USB mass storage, speakerphone, MP3 player, and a vast 4 GB storage space.
It gives a talk time of three hours on full charge and supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900. You can share video calls, access IM and Yahoo and use the superior EDGE technology for faster data downloads. Accessories include a lithium ion battery and a charger.
The A 737 weighs just 2.09 ounces and measures 3.74×1.89×0.63 inches. The slider mechanism is powerful and the thumb grip is ideal for moving the front face up and down. It sports a lime green color accent on the sides that make it stand out among other competitors. The two-inch display has a screen resolution of 262,000 colors and displays bright and sharp images. It is possible to modify the backlight and brightness, as well as the font size, color and type. The menus are simple to navigate and easily pop up while scrolling.
The phone has a large circular toggle that is sensitive to touch and lets you access four user-defined functions. You also have the option of programming a secondary shortcut menu with your favorite features. There are two buttons for Clear and Talk/End functions and a shortcut for the music player. The number buttons are large and backlit and well-spaced out. The side panel of the phone has a volume control and a Micro SD card slot on the left and a charging slot and shortcut menu control on the right. The camera lens is on the back of the slider and this means you have to open the phone every time you want to click a picture.
The Samsung SGH comes with a large thousand contact phone book with a provision for two email addresses, IM handle, two URLs, six phone numbers, and notes. You can assign caller tunes or photos to groups of contacts for easy identification. Other features include a vibrate mode, alarm clock, calculator, currency converter, notepad and a tip calculator. You can choose from six games, but have to buy the full versions for extensive play.
You can use the music player to create play lists, Shuffle and Repeat your favorite tracks. The camera clicks pictures in five resolutions and quality settings, besides offering a basket of features like brightness and white-balance, multi-shot, night shot, self-timer and twenty fun frames. There is some shutter sound and the picture quality is not that satisfying. You can record 30-second video clips for multimedia messaging and other clips for an unlimited time period.
Coming to the sound quality, the signal is good and there is no static. The volume varies and the sound gets muffled in noisy backgrounds. The speakerphone performs well enough, but the Bluetooth calls were definitely better. However the 3 G downloads were a bit slow. On the flip side the voice quality is shaky and the picture quality is average. Overall, however, the Samsung SGH is a well-designed and user-friendly phone with easy navigational controls.
