The Sony Ericsson W200a does not boast of many flashy features; it is a simple phone that will easily catch the sight of the easy-going mobile users. The simple design of the W200a is enough for those who do not want to flaunt their mobile phones. Available for a $150, it is intended for the young and the new mobile users.
The W200a is a fully functional music player too. It has the Walkman music player inbuilt in it. Apart from this, it comes with an infrared port, and it gives access to FM radio. It has been provided with a VGA camera. However, it does not have the Bluetooth feature.
The W200a has a candy-bar design with a thin body and clean lines. The appearance of the phone defines its simple, easy-to-use features. It measures 3.9-inches x 1.7-inches X 0.7-inch. It weighs 3 ounces. There are two models available at present – the “rhythm black” and “pulse white.”
The W200a has got a 1.75-inch display with a 65,536-color resolution. It gives a decent picture quality with the 160X128 pixel resolution, though not excellent for graphics and photos. The brightness level can be adjusted.
The most important feature of the W200a is its user-friendly controls. The five-way joystick and the control keys are well placed. There are two soft keys- Back button and Clear button. The buttons are rectangular in shape and they have a backlight too. The left spine of the W200a carries the memory card slot and the music control, while the right spine carries the volume rocker. The power button and the infrared port are situated at the head while the charger port and the headset jack are at the bottom end. The speaker and the camera lens are situated at the back of the phone.
The W200a offers all the standard facilities of a mobile phone. It has a 1,000-contact phone book, 16 polyphonic ring tones, a vibrate mode, a voice memo recorder, multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, a calendar, a notepad, a speakerphone, a stopwatch, a calculator, etc. it has added utilities such as voice dialing, e-mail support, an RSS news reader, PC syncing, USB mass storage, and a code memo to save sensitive information.
The Walkman player uses the basic Walkman interface found in the earlier models such as the W600i. It does not offer any visualization while the music is on. There is an equalizer and Sony’s Mega Bass provided as music enhancements.
The phone has an internal memory of 27MB, which makes it capable of storing the audio and the graphics effectively. There is Disc2Phone software provided in the W200a to load music. It is also possible to drag and drop the music from your PC. The USB cable facilitates its connection with a PC. The W200a lacks stereo speakers, but it has got a good volume output and good sound quality.
Lastly, the VGA camera is a surprise element in the W200a. It yields good quality photos; you can extend the resolution of the pictures from 640X480 to four desired levels. The camcorder performance is appreciable with a good quality video and a number of editing options. It can take video clips of up to 2 minutes.
In short, the W200a is the simplest phone with all the excellent features embedded in it.
