The Tecra M8 is a light-weight medium-sized notebook for business users. The Tecra M8 stands out among the crowd of business laptops because of its sturdy appearance. Of course, the 13-inch screen is a pleasant surprise to all those who worry about the portability of the big laptops. This is the choice of laptop for those who have dreamt of a big screen within a manageable budget and also within a portable laptop case. Toshiba has beautifully managed to meet the ergonomics of a business notebook by offering this medium-sized and medium-priced laptop for them. It costs about $1,324 / $1,249. The price variation is because of the difference in the configuration of the hard drive components.

The Tecra M8 uses a 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 with a RAM of 1GB, 667MHz DDR2. The hard drive has a capacity of 800GB at 5,400rpm. It uses Windows Vista Premium as its operating system. There are many options to upgrade the Tecra M8. The processor can be upgraded to a faster T7300 or T7700 for another $550. Other optional upgrades include an extra 1GB of RAM for $200. The hard disk can be upgraded to 120GB for an additional $75 and to 160GB with another $50.

The Tecra M8 measures 12.1 inches x 9.5 inches x 1.4 inches (length X height X thickness). It weighs 4.6 pounds without an AC adapter. The chassis look sturdier with its gray-and-black combination. The upper lid is stiffer compared to the base, and the hard drive is protected against falls. The input unit consists of a standard keyboard with a touchpad.

The 13.3-inch wide LCD display offers 1,280×800 pixels resolution. This enhances the picture quality and the appearance of the contents on the screen. The Tecra M8 comes with a 1.3megapixel webcam and a fingerprint reader. Additionally, there is a 3D accelerometer included in it.

The advanced features include an 802.11n Wi-Fi technology and the aka Draft N. Bluetooth. However the Bluetooth will cost you an extra $25.

The Tecra puts forth a decent performance compared to the competitors such as Toshiba’s own Portege R500, the Apple MacBook, or the Sony VAIO TZ150. Its multitasking features such as the multimedia tasks, web browsing and general performance tasks are up to the mark. It has a long battery life as well.

Toshiba offers the necessary software for its smooth functioning as a business laptop. The major software includes Toshiba Management Console, Toshiba Assist, etc. A trial version of McAfee Internet Security Suite and Microsoft Office Professional 2007 is added along with the Toshiba software.

Toshiba offers a one-year service and support warranty to Tecra. It can be extended to three years with an additional $100.
