The Acer Aspire 4710 will attract you with its one and only feature – its price. It costs only $599. Do you wonder about the possibility of making a laptop for such a price? Yes, it is possible with Acer. And that’s it. No other feature of this Aspire is capable of conquering the aspiring customers. Then, whom is it intended for? For those who wish to type documents or do the normal internet surfing such as checking email. Of course, they can play DVDs as well.

The dimensions of the Acer Aspire 4710 are 13.5 X 9.4 X 1.3 inches, and it weighs 5.6 pounds without the AC adapter. It has been provided with an ExpressCard/54 slot and has facilities for a modem, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connections.

The Aspire 4710 is powered with a Pentium Dual-Core processor. However, considering its much lower 1.73GHz speed, this is far behind in terms of its performance when compared to the laptops with the Core Duo processors. The encouraging fact about the Acer Aspire 4710 is that it is provided with 1GB of 533MHz Cache memory and 120GB hard drive at 5,400rpm.

At first glance you will be impressed by its ’soft look’. The smaller size and the rounded corners, however, are not sufficient to give it softness. The Aspire 4710 overall feels very tough and solid. The keyboard, though possesses well-placed keys, is placed a bit closer to the touch pad. The result – you will hit the touch pad unnecessarily while typing the text.

The screen display is of poor quality. The 14.2″ display is shaky at times, and it gives a bad impression about the product. Acer, in its expensive version the Aspire 5920 also, had failed to cope up with this problem. Moreover the picture quality and the brightness are not up to the benchmark of the basic laptops available now. The colors look washed out at the maximum brightness level. The reflection from the glossy screen is not manageable in a normal working condition.

Aspire 4710 is good at playing movies. Keeping this important feature in mind, Acer could have provided a few convenient control buttons in the keyboard for the media controls. However, it has got the volume control wheel at its front edge and other features such as the speakers and the Empower key above the keyboard. The Empower key facilitates utilities such as managing battery life, network and sound settings.

The performance of the Acer Aspire 4710, as mentioned above, is disappointing. It can be considered equivalent to a Celeron single-core processor. It is sluggish, especially while using the network applications. While the competitors are releasing products with more advanced technology, it is depressing to see that Acer opted for the outdated processor in this otherwise decent laptop.

If you are a home PC-user and you enjoy watching videos and movies, this will be sufficient for you. However, it would make your life difficult if you start surfing the net for some valuable information or try to download a video.
