However, many people don’t stop to think about exactly what they’re ordering every week, every other day, or even everyday as they suck up their frappuccinos at lightning speed. According to a new study, they’re getting a lot; a lot of calories and a lot of fat. We’ve heard before that frappuccinos and other cold coffee drinks were high in fat and calories, but did we know that a frappuccino was more fattening than a McDonald’s Big Mac and medium Coke? That’s right, you’d be better off having a Big Mac and medium Coke than you would a Starbucks’ frappuccino.

For some, the news is shocking. Most would never think a cold coffee beverage could be so much. However, items like the Gloria Jean’s Crème Brulee Chiller and the Starbucks White Hot Chocolate with Whip each give you about 31 grams of fat and 20 teaspoons of sugar. And, for most average women, that’s about 40 percent of their daily fat intake.

Although, it’s important to understand that not only women are drinking these coffees. We tend to have a cliché image of the ‘secretary’ and her daily coffee beverage. But that’s simply not how it is anymore. Everybody’s drinking coffee and enjoying it. From pre-teens to elders, the coffee house is taking the world by storm. There are many reasons for it as well. For one, coffee’s more portable (it’s difficult to eat a Big Mac while you’re driving), secondly, it provides much needed caffeine (most people are too lazy or simply do not have enough time to make coffee every morning). Thirdly, its refreshing (you don’t feel so bad after drinking a frappuccino like you do after eating most fast food). And lastly, well, it’s everywhere. Due to the popularity, no matter where you go you can expect to see a Starbucks or a Caribou on almost every corner.

What people have to worry about is how much of the stuff they’re drinking. We’ve seen “Super-Size Me” and other anti-McDonalds propaganda that warns us of fatty fast food products. However, there isn’t much information out there on the harmful effects of chain coffee house products. Just like anything else, these things need to be taken in moderation. Soon, people will begin to realize the problems with drinking so much of these products. If they don’t, then they’ll be doing a lot of harm to themselves in the long run.
